Mount Damāvand

Mount Damāvand also known as Donbavand, is a latent volcano and the highest peak in Iran with a special place in the Persian mythology and tradition. Located in the middle Alborz Range, adjacent to Varārū, Sesang, Gol-e Zard and Mīānrūd, it is the highest point in the Middle East and the highest volcano in all of Asia. Though not volcanically vigorous, there are fumaroles near the pinnacle crater that deposit sulfur, which were most recently known to be active on July 6, 2007. The mountain is located near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, in Āmol county, Māzandarān, 66 kilometres (41 miles) northeast of Tehran.

Damavand is, as any superficial reading of Persian literature will designate, the Mount Olympus of Persian mythology. Damāvand is the symbol of Iranian confrontation against the foreign rule in Persian poetry and journalism. In Zoroastrian texts and mythology, the three-headed dragon Aži Dahāka was chained within Mount Damāvand, there to remain until the end of the world. In a later version of the same legend, the tyrant Zahhāk was also chained on some cave in mount Damāvand after being crushed by Kāveh and Fereydūn. Damāvand is also momentous to the Iranian legend of Arash. The mountain is said to hold magical powers in the Šahnameh.

Cho Oyu

Cho Oyu, in Nepal is the sixth highest mountain in the world. Cho Oyu deception in the Himalayas and is 20 km west of Mount Everest, at the border between China and Nepal. Cho Oyu means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan.

Cho Oyu was first attempted in 1952 by an outing led by Eric Shipton and including Tom Bourdillon, but technical difficulties at an ice precipice over 6,650m (21,820ft) proved beyond their abilities. (Today, these ice cliffs are generally ascended using fixed ropes.) Cho Oyu was first climbed on October 19, 1954 via the northwest ridge by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama of an Austrian voyage. Cho Oyu was the fifth 8000 metre peak to be climbed, after Annapurna in June 1950, Mount Everest in May 1953, Nanga Parbat in July 1953 and K2 in July 1954.

Just a few kilometres west of Cho Oyu is Nangpa La (5,716m/18,753ft), a glaciated pass that serves as the main trading route between the Tibetans and the Khumbu's Sherpas. Due to its immediacy to this pass and the normally reasonable slopes of the standard northwest ridge route, climbers consider Cho Oyu to be the easiest 8,000 metre peak to climb, and it is a popular objective for competently guided parties.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest, also called Chomolungma or Qomolangma or Sagarmatha is the maximum mountain on Earth, as measured by the height of its pinnacle above sea level, which is 8,848 meters or 29,028 feet. The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in High Asia, is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet. By the end of the 2007 mountaineering season there had been 3,679 ascents to the pinnacle by 2,436 individuals. There have been 210 deaths on the mountain, where conditions are so thorny that most corpses have been left where they fell; some are evident from standard hiking routes.

Climbers range from experienced mountaineers to relation novices who count on their paid guides to get them to the top. This means climbers are a momentous source of tourist revenue for Nepal, whose government also requires all probable climbers to obtain an exclusive permit, costing up to $25,000 (USD) per being.

K2

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth. It is located in the Karakoram part of the Himalayan range, on the border between the Gilgit-Baltistan area of Pakistan and the Taxkorgan Tajik independent County of Xinjiang, China However, those who climb K2 must acquire entry via Pakistan as the Chinese side is unreachable.

Chinese authorities legitimately refer to K2 as Qogir; simplified Chinese; traditional Chinese; pinyin: Qiáogēlǐ Fēng. This name is derived from Chogori, a synthetic name made up by Western explorers early in the 20th century from two Balti words, chhogo ('big') and ri ('mountain'). Other names include Mount Godwin-Austen, Lamba Pahar ("Tall Mountain" in Urdu: کے ٹو), Dapsang, Kechu or Ketu.

There are a number of routes on K2, of somewhat different character, but they all share some key difficulties: First is the severe high elevation and resulting lack of oxygen: in fact there is only one third as much oxygen available to a backpacker on the summit of K2 as there is at sea level. Second is the tendency of the mountain to experience extreme storms of several days' duration, which have resulted in many of the deaths on the peak. Third is the steep, exposed, and committing nature of all routes on the mountain, which makes retreat more complicated, particularly during a storm. Despite many tries there has been no triumphant ascent during the winter.

Great Himalayas

The Great Himalayas be positioned north of the Lower Himalayan Range. These mountains are surrounded by the Indus River in the north and the west as the river takes a southward turn at Sazin. The average height of the range is about 6000 meters. Some of the highest peaks in the world lie in these mountains e.g. Nanga Parbat (8126 meters), which is the 6th highest peak in the world and the 2nd highest peak in Pakistan.

Since the mountains are forever covered with snow there are several glaciers, with Rupal Glacier being the longest (17.6 km) . The glacial action has created many beautiful lakes like the Saiful Muluk lake which lies in the upper Kaghan Valley. Another evident geographic feature of this area are the deep gorges carved by the Indus in this region. The deepest of which, located at Dasu-Patan region (Kohistan District), is 6500 meters deep.
